چکیده

A numerical and experimental study is performed on transient natural convection in an insulated rectangular tank. The liquid is suddenly heated by a line source or cooled by a line sink being placed at the center of the free surface to initiate a thermocapillary force. Evaporation or condensation takes place on the free surface. A finite-difference technique is employed to numerically integrate the unsteady vorticity and heat transport equations. Numerical results are obtained to determine the effects of dimensionless governing parameters on the transfer phenomena. In an evaporative system with low Marangoni number (Ma), three distinct convective mechanisms are identified: surface. tension-driven, buoyancy-driven and mixed types. The differences in the flow behavior are disclosed between condensation, evaporation and no phase change. Theory is in qualitative agreement with evaporation experiments in high Ma systems.

Numerical Prediction of Temperature Distribution in Transient RTM Process

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is a composite manufacturing process. A preformed fiber is placed in a closed mold and a viscous resin is injected into the mold. In this paper, a model is developed to predict the flow pattern, extent of reaction and temperature change during filling and curing in a thin rectangular mold. A numerical simulation is presented to predict the free surface and...

Drag coefficient and strouhal number analysis of a rectangular probe in a two-phase cross flow

In some case of laboratory and industrial applications, various kind of measurement instruments must be placed in a conduit, in which multiphase fluid flows. Vortex shedding for any immersed body in flow field is created with a frequency, which according to flow conditions such as flow rates, geometry of body, etc. may be constant or variable. Failure may happen, if this frequency is close to o...

Subcooled two-phase flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink: comparison of conventional numerical models

Subcooled flow boiling in multi-microchannels can be used as an efficient thermal management approach in compact electrical devices. Highly subcooled flow boiling of HFE 7100 is studied in two microchannel heat sinks to choose a proper numerical model for simulating boiling flows in microchannels. Results of five different numerical models, including Volume of Fluid (VOF), Eulerian boiling, Eul...

Planar digital nanoliter dispensing system based on thermocapillary actuation.

We provide guidelines for the design and operation of a planar digital nanodispensing system based on thermocapillary actuation. Thin metallic microheaters embedded within a chemically patterned glass substrate are electronically activated to generate and control 2D surface temperature distributions which either arrest or trigger liquid flow and droplet formation on demand. This flow control is...
